The chief of the nine Nazgul and Sauron's most feared servant. Originally a great king of Men, he was enslaved by one of the nine Rings of Power and became a wraith, the most powerful of the Ringwraiths. In the Third Age, he established the realm of Angmar and waged a long war that destroyed the North-kingdom of Arnor. He stabbed Frodo with a Morgul- blade on Weathertop, nearly turning him into a wraith. He led the siege of Minas Tirith and broke the Great Gate with dark sorcery. He killed King Theoden at the Pelennor Fields but was then destroyed by Eowyn and Merry, fulfilling the prophecy of Glorfindel that he would not fall by the hand of man. Merry's Barrow-blade, made by the Dunedain of old specifically to fight the forces of Angmar, was crucial in breaking the spells that bound his undead form.
