Also known as: The Shadow Of The East, The Black Easterling
The only Nazgul other than the Witch-king whose name is recorded. An Easterling king in life, he was ensnared by one of the Nine Rings and became second among the Ringwraiths, called the Shadow of the East. He was the lieutenant of Dol Guldur after Sauron's return to Mordor, and it was Khamul who came closest to catching the Ring at the very start of the quest — he was the Black Rider who questioned Farmer Maggot and sniffed for the Ring on the road while Frodo hid behind a tree mere feet away. He perished with the rest of the Nine in the fires of Orodruin when the Ring went into the Fire.
