The Hill of Sorcery in southern Mirkwood, where a dark power calling itself the Necromancer arose less than half through the Third Age. There Gandalf, entering in secret, found Thráin dying in the pits and received the key of Erebor; there too he confirmed the Necromancer was Sauron returned. The White Council drove him out — only for him to reveal he had prepared Mordor behind them. In the War of the Ring its armies burned Lórien's borders thrice in vain, and after victory Galadriel threw down its walls and laid its pits bare.
