Son of Thror and father of Thorin. He led the Dwarves in the War against the Orcs and later attempted a journey to Erebor but was captured by Sauron and imprisoned in Dol Guldur. The last of the Seven Dwarf-rings was taken from him. Gandalf found him there, dying, and Thrain gave him the map and key to the secret door of Erebor.
