Thorin Oakenshield

Also known as: Thorin Ii, King Under The Mountain

Leader of the quest to reclaim Erebor from the dragon Smaug and heir to the throne of Durin's Folk. Thorin was the grandson of Thror and son of Thrain II, born in the Lonely Mountain but driven into exile when Smaug attacked. He fought in the Battle of Azanulbizar (the War of the Dwarves and Orcs) where he earned his epithet by using an oak-branch as a shield after his own was broken. He led a company of thirteen Dwarves and the hobbit Bilbo on the quest to reclaim Erebor, guided by Gandalf's counsel. Though noble and courageous, Thorin was afflicted by "dragon-sickness," an obsessive greed for the treasure of Erebor (particularly the Arkenstone), which led him to nearly break faith with his allies. He redeemed himself by leading the Dwarves' charge in the Battle of Five Armies, where he was mortally wounded. On his deathbed, he reconciled with Bilbo and spoke words that became famous: valuing food, cheer, and song above hoarded gold. He was buried with the Arkenstone and his sword Orcrist.
