Founded by Thráin I, who found the Arkenstone there, it grew fat on craft and trade with the Men of Dale — until Smaug descended in fire in 2770 and held the hoard for nearly two centuries. Thorin Oakenshield's quest, with a certain reluctant burglar, ended the dragon and rekindled the kingdom under Dáin Ironfoot; in the War of the Ring, Erebor withstood siege and broke Sauron's northern army.
