Smaug the Golden, last and greatest of the fire-drakes of the North in his age, was the dragon who fell upon the Kingdom under the Mountain in the year 2770 of the Third Age. Drawn by the great wealth of Erebor, he laid waste the Dwarf-realm and the neighbouring town of Dale, slaughtered or scattered their people, and gathered the whole hoard into a vast bed of gold on which he lay; over long years gems and golden plates became encrusted into his belly like a coat of mail -- save for one hollow upon his left breast, which remained bare. Cunning, vain, and of honeyed and dangerous speech, he slept upon his stolen treasure for some one hundred and seventy years.
His ruin came with the coming of Thorin's company and their hired burglar, Bilbo Baggins, who crept invisible into the dragon's hall, flattered him into boasting, and so spied the single bare patch in the armour of his left breast. A thrush overheard Bilbo tell of it, and bore the word to Bard, a grim archer of Lake-town descended from the lords of Dale. When the enraged Smaug came roaring down to burn the town, Bard loosed his last and oldest arrow into that very hollow, and the great dragon fell from the sky dead among the ruins; and his fall, and the masterless mountain of gold he left behind, drew Men, Elves, and Dwarves together at the last to the Battle of the Five Armies.
