Also known as: Smaug The Magnificent, Smaug The Terrible, Smaug The Chiefest And Greatest Of Calamities
The last of the great fire-drakes and the dragon who drove the Dwarves from Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, in the year 2770 of the Third Age. Smaug was immensely powerful, cunning, and vain, with a body armored in gems that had become embedded in his belly from lying upon his treasure hoard. He destroyed the city of Dale and the Dwarf-kingdom and slept upon the vast treasure for 171 years. Bilbo Baggins entered his lair and engaged him in a riddling conversation, during which Bilbo discovered a bare patch on his left breast where a scale was missing. This information was carried to Bard of Laketown by a thrush. When Smaug attacked Laketown in fury, Bard shot him through the bare patch with a black arrow, and the great dragon fell dead upon the ruins of the town. His death set in motion the Battle of Five Armies.
