A grim-faced man of Laketown descended from Girion, the last Lord of Dale before Smaug's coming. When Smaug attacked Laketown, Bard rallied the defenders and, informed by the thrush of Smaug's one weakness (a bare patch in his jeweled armor), shot the dragon through the heart with a black arrow, the last arrow in his quiver. He led the Men of the Lake in the Battle of Five Armies and afterward refounded the Kingdom of Dale, becoming its first king. He was known for his wisdom and fairness in the division of Smaug's treasure.
