Turin Turambar

Also known as: Turambar, Neithan, Gorthol, Agarwaen, Adanedhel, Mormegil, The Black Sword Of Nargothrond, Tuor -- Not To Be Confused

Son of Hurin and Morwen, Turin is the tragic hero of one of the darkest tales in Tolkien's legendarium. Cursed by Morgoth because of Hurin's defiance, Turin's life was a succession of disasters despite his great valor and beauty. He was fostered in Doriath, where he accidentally caused the death of Saeros and fled. He became an outlaw, then a champion of Nargothrond under the name Mormegil ("Black Sword"), wielding the cursed blade Gurthang (re-forged from Anglachel). His rash counsel led to Nargothrond's fall. Deceived by the dragon Glaurung, he failed to rescue Finduilas and unknowingly married his own sister Nienor, who had lost her memory through Glaurung's spell. When the truth was revealed, Nienor threw herself into the river Teiglin, and Turin fell upon his sword. Tolkien's telling of this story, "The Children of Hurin," is one of the great tragic narratives of the First Age.
