The town of Men built on wooden pillars out in the Long Lake, south of Erebor, living by trade up and down the Running River. It received Thorin's bedraggled company with feasting and high hopes — and paid for it when Smaug came down in fire. Bard the Bowman slew the dragon from the burning town with his last arrow, and with a share of the mountain's treasure Esgaroth was rebuilt richer than before.
