The Brown Lands were a wide, dreary waste on the east bank of the Anduin between Mirkwood and the Emyn Muil, treeless and brown and dead, where nothing seemed to grow. The Fellowship passed them with foreboding as they rowed south from Lorien; and the lore of the Ents held that this withered country had once been the gardens of the Entwives, until they were laid waste in the wars of the Second Age, and the Entwives themselves were lost.
