The Emyn Muil were a tangled range of bleak, knife-edged hills on either side of the Anduin above the falls of Rauros, a barren maze of bare stone with no easy path. There the Fellowship's southward journey faltered before the breaking of the Company; and there, afterward, Frodo and Sam wandered lost and weary among the crags until they captured Gollum, who alone knew a way down out of the hills and onward toward the Dead Marshes and the Black Gate.
