Samwise Gamgee

Also known as: Sam, Samwise The Brave, Mayor Of The Shire, Banazir Galpsi

Samwise Gamgee is the true heart of The Lord of the Rings and the character Tolkien himself identified as the chief hero of the story. The son of Hamfast "the Gaffer" Gamgee, Sam was Frodo's gardener, and he joined the quest initially because Gandalf caught him eavesdropping under Bag End's window. What began as a servant's loyalty became the most steadfast and selfless devotion in all of Tolkien's work.

Sam carried Frodo bodily up the slopes of Mount Doom when Frodo could no longer walk. He fought Shelob with the Phial of Galadriel and Sting, driving the great spider back. He briefly bore the One Ring and was the only Ring-bearer to give it up entirely of his own free will. He rescued Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol single-handedly. His love for Frodo, his loyalty, and his humble determination represent the quiet heroism of ordinary people that Tolkien valued above all.

After the War of the Ring, Sam returned to the Shire and married Rosie Cotton. He was elected Mayor of the Shire seven times. Using the gift of earth from Galadriel, he replanted the Shire, including a mallorn tree in the Party Field. He and Rosie had thirteen children, including Elanor the Fair. After Rosie's death, Sam, as the last living Ring-bearer, is said to have sailed from the Grey Havens to join Frodo in the Undying Lands.
