Also known as: The Morannon, Morannon
The Morannon, the Black Gate of Mordor, barred the narrow northern entry into Sauron's land where the arms of the Ered Lithui and the Ephel Duath drew together. Built by Gondor in its watchful days to keep evil in, it was later seized by Sauron and made terrible: a rampart of iron and stone flanked by the watch-towers called the Teeth of Mordor, Carchost and Narchost. Frodo and Sam despaired before its impassable strength and turned aside to seek another way. There at the end the Captains of the West led their small host to challenge Sauron and draw his Eye from the Ring-bearer; and when the Ring went into the Fire, Gate and towers fell together into ruin.
