Gorgoroth was the high, blasted plateau in the northwest of Mordor, a desolation of ash, slag, and riven stone ringed by the inner mountains, where nothing grew and the air was choked with fume. Upon its plain stood Mount Doom, and across the waste ran the road from the Black Gate to the Dark Tower of Barad-dur, which loomed above it. Through this dead and watchful land Frodo and Sam made their last terrible march to the Mountain and the Fire.
