Nurn was the southern region of Mordor, less barren than the ashen north -- a land of bitter fields about the inland Sea of Nurnen, worked by slaves to feed the armies of Sauron. After the fall of the Dark Lord, King Elessar freed the thralls who had laboured there and gave them the land of Nurn to hold as their own.
