The Arkenstone

Also known as: The Heart Of The Mountain

The Heart of the Mountain, a great white jewel found at Erebor's root by Thráin I and shaped by the Dwarves into a globe of ten thousand glittering facets that drank and returned all light. To Thorin Oakenshield it was worth more than a river of gold — and the lust of it nearly brought ruin, when Bilbo, who had pocketed it as his promised fourteenth share, gave it to Bard and Thranduil as a bargaining piece for peace. Thorin called him traitor; dying after the Battle of Five Armies, he took it back in friendship. The Arkenstone was laid on Thorin's breast in his tomb beneath the Mountain.
