Also known as: The Elvenking
Thranduil the Elvenking ruled the Woodland Realm of the Silvan Elves in the north of Mirkwood, and was the father of Legolas of the Fellowship. A Sindarin Elf, son of Oropher, he governed his folk from a great cavern-palace delved beneath a hill and gated by a river, after the manner of Menegroth in ancient Doriath, whence his house had come. In the Second Age he and Oropher led a host of the Silvan Elves to the War of the Last Alliance; but Oropher fell in the assault at Dagorlad, and Thranduil brought home barely a third of those who had marched south.
Proud, wary, and fond of jewels and good wine, he ruled a diminished but watchful realm under the lengthening shadow of Dol Guldur. In the days of The Hobbit he took Thorin and his company captive for trespassing in his woods, and afterward led an army of Elves to the Lonely Mountain to claim a share of the dragon's hoard, fighting at the last in the Battle of the Five Armies against the goblins and wargs. In the War of the Ring his people threw back a great assault out of Dol Guldur in the Battle under the Trees; and after Sauron's fall, when Galadriel had thrown down that dark hold, Thranduil met Celeborn and the two divided the great forest between them, and Thranduil renamed his land Eryn Lasgalen, the Wood of Greenleaves.
