Legolas Greenleaf

Also known as: Prince Of The Woodland Realm

Son of Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm of northern Mirkwood, Legolas is a Sindarin Elf who represented his people as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. He is a peerless archer and possesses the keen senses common to Elves: far-seeing eyes, light feet that leave no track in snow, and an endurance beyond that of Men. Throughout the quest, he developed an unlikely and deep friendship with Gimli the Dwarf, a remarkable bond given the ancient enmity between their peoples.

During the War of the Ring, Legolas fought at Amon Hen, Helm's Deep, the Paths of the Dead, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and the Black Gate of Mordor. He famously slew a Mumakil single-handedly at Pelennor. When he first heard the cry of the gulls at Pelargir, a sea-longing was awakened in him that never left. After the war, he brought Elves from the Woodland Realm to Ithilien, where they restored the land's beauty. According to legend, after King Elessar's death, Legolas built a grey ship and sailed to Valinor, taking Gimli with him -- the only Dwarf ever to be granted passage to the Undying Lands.
