The Lieutenant of Barad-dur, called the Mouth of Sauron, was a living man -- a renegade of the Black Numenoreans, those proud lords of the West who in the Second Age had settled in Middle-earth and fallen to the worship of the Dark. He entered Sauron's service when the Dark Tower first rose again, and rose so high in his master's favour, and grew so steeped in the evil lore and sorcery he had learned, that he forgot his own birth-name; he was known only by his office, for he spoke his master's will.
At the parley before the Black Gate, as the captains of the West stood with their small army to draw the Eye from Frodo, the Mouth rode out arrayed in black, mocking and proud. He cast down before them the tokens of a captive -- Frodo's mithril coat, an elven-cloak, and a short orc-sword -- and claimed the Ring-bearer was taken, demanding harsh terms of surrender. Gandalf seized the trophies and rejected the terms, and the herald, dismayed by the wizard's authority and the ruin of his errand, fled back to his master as the last battle was joined. The tale does not record his end.
