The King Of The Dead

Also known as: The Oathbreaker, The Dead Men Of Dunharrow, The Sleepless Dead

The king of the Men of the White Mountains who swore allegiance to Isildur at the Stone of Erech — and broke his oath when the summons came, for his people had worshipped Sauron in the Dark Years and would not fight against him. Isildur's curse denied them death's rest: they lingered as shades in the haunted ways under the Dwimorberg through an entire age of the world, until the heir of Isildur should call them to fulfil their oath at last. Aragorn did. The Shadow Host followed him from the Dark Door to Pelargir, where the mere terror of them swept the fleets of Umbar clean, and the King of the Dead stood before Aragorn a final time, broke his spear, and faded forever — released, the oath fulfilled.
