Umbar was a great natural harbour and fortress-city far south of Gondor, settled in the Second Age by the Black Numenoreans, proud Men who had fallen under the Shadow. For an age it was the haven of the Corsairs, sea-raiders who warred without cease upon the coasts of Gondor. Ar-Pharazon of Numenor landed there to humble Sauron; and there, long after, Aragorn in his youth, as the captain Thorongil, burned the Corsair fleet at anchor. In the War of the Ring the black ships of Umbar sailed up the Anduin to the Pelennor, only for Aragorn and the Dead to capture them and turn them to the rescue of Minas Tirith.
