Also known as: Westernesse, Anadune, Atalante, Elenna
The great island realm raised from the sea by the Valar as a reward for the Edain who fought against Morgoth, also called Westernesse and Elenna, the Land of the Star. Its men were granted long life and great wisdom, and became the mightiest mariners the world has seen — but they were forbidden to sail west to the Undying Lands. Envy of immortality corrupted them; the last king, Ar-Pharazôn, humbled Sauron and was in turn ensnared by him, raising a temple to Morgoth and at last breaking the Ban itself. Eru intervened: Númenor was drowned beneath the sea, and only Elendil and the Faithful escaped to found Gondor and Arnor. Among the Eldar it was afterwards named Atalantë, the Downfallen.
