The Helcaraxe, the Grinding Ice, was the strait of cruel, ever-shifting ice and freezing sea in the utter north of the world, where Aman drew near to Middle-earth. After Feanor burned the ships at Losgar and abandoned his kin on the far shore, Fingolfin in pride and bitterness led his host across this deadly waste on foot; the crossing cost many lives, among them Elenwe wife of Turgon, and those who came through it into Middle-earth were hardened by grief and labour.
