Fingolfin

Also known as: High King Of The Noldor

The eldest son of Finwe by his second wife Indis, and half-brother of Feanor. Fingolfin was the greatest warrior among the Noldor. When Feanor burned the ships at Losgar, abandoning Fingolfin's host, Fingolfin led his people across the Helcaraxe, the Grinding Ice between Valinor and Middle-earth, a crossing that cost many lives. He became High King of the Noldor after Feanor's death and maintained the Siege of Angband for hundreds of years. When the siege was broken in the Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame), Fingolfin rode alone in despair and wrath to the gates of Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat. Though he wounded Morgoth seven times, Fingolfin was slain, but even in death he cut Morgoth's foot with his last stroke. Thorondor, King of Eagles, retrieved his body.
