Also known as: High King Of The Noldor
Fingolfin, eldest son of Finwe by his second wife Indis and half-brother of Feanor, was the mightiest in arms of all the princes of the Noldor, and after Feanor's death the High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth. When Feanor burned the ships at Losgar and abandoned him on the western shores of the Sea, Fingolfin in pride and bitterness led his host across the Helcaraxe, the Grinding Ice of the utter north -- a passage of dreadful cold and peril that cost many lives, among them Elenwe, the wife of his son Turgon.
For near four hundred years of the Long Peace he upheld the Siege of Angband, holding Morgoth penned within his fortress. But when the siege was broken in fire in the Dagor Bragollach, the Battle of Sudden Flame, and the realms of the Noldor began to fall, Fingolfin in wrath and despair rode alone to the very gates of Angband and smote upon them, challenging Morgoth to single combat. The Dark Lord came forth, loath but shamed before his host; and they fought, and seven times Fingolfin wounded him, and seven times Morgoth's cry of pain shook the north -- until at the last the king, weary, was beaten down and slain, yet with his final stroke he hewed the Dark Lord's foot, so that Morgoth went ever after halt and his wounds never healed. Thorondor, King of Eagles, swept down and marred Morgoth's face, and bore the broken body away to a high peak, where Turgon raised a cairn above his father.
