The Hells of Iron, Morgoth's great fortress beneath the volcanic triple peaks of Thangorodrim in the north of the ancient world. From its pits came the orcs, the dragons, and the Balrogs; in its deepest dungeon Morgoth set Maedhros on the cliff-face and chained Húrin to a chair of stone. Fingolfin rode alone to its gate and wounded Morgoth seven times before the end. In the War of Wrath the host of the Valar broke Angband utterly, and Thangorodrim was cast down.
