The first and mightiest stronghold of Melkor, delved in the far north of the world in the deeps of time before the Elves awoke. From Utumno the dark spread that twisted captured Elves into the first orcs. When the Valar learned of the Awakening at Cuiviénen, they made war for the protection of the Firstborn, broke Utumno's gates, and carried Melkor to Valinor in chains — though its deepest pits were never fully searched, and evil things lingered there long after.
