Vinyamar was the first dwelling of Turgon, a great hall of stone beneath Mount Taras by the western sea, where he ruled the Noldor of his following before he departed in secret to build the hidden city of Gondolin. At Ulmo's bidding he left there a shield, hauberk, sword, and helm; and long after, Tuor came to the empty halls and found the arms laid ready for him, and there Ulmo himself rose from the sea to send him on his errand to Gondolin.
