The eldest son of Feanor and the most moderate of his brothers. After Feanor's death, Maedhros was captured by Morgoth and hung by his right wrist from a precipice on Thangorodrim for years until Fingon rescued him, severing his hand to free him. He yielded the High Kingship to Fingolfin and organized the Union of Maedhros, an attempt to unite all free peoples against Morgoth. After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, he was driven to commit terrible deeds by Feanor's oath, including attacking the Havens of Sirion. Filled with despair and pain, he cast himself and his Silmaril into a chasm of fire after the War of Wrath.
