Also known as: Ereinion, High King Of The Noldor
Ereinion, called Gil-galad ("Star of Radiance") for the gleam of his helm and mail, was the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth. Of the royal House of Finwe, he ruled the Elven realm of Lindon west of the Blue Mountains through the long years of the Second Age, and gave refuge to Elrond and to the Noldor who had survived the drowning of Beleriand. When Sauron's deceit in the forging of the Rings was unmasked, Gil-galad made war upon him: in the War of the Elves and Sauron his realm was hard pressed and Eregion destroyed, until a great fleet out of Numenor came to his aid and drove the Enemy back into the East.
At the end of the age he forged the Last Alliance of Elves and Men with his friend Elendil, and together they marched upon Mordor and besieged Barad-dur for seven years. He bore the spear Aeglos, whose thrust none could withstand, and held Vilya, the mightiest of the Three Rings, which he gave at the last into Elrond's keeping. In the final assault upon the slopes of Orodruin, Gil-galad and Elendil together overthrew Sauron, but both perished in the doing of it, Gil-galad consumed by the terrible heat of the Dark Lord's hand. With his fall the line of the High Kings of the Noldor in Middle-earth came to an end.
