The Blue Mountains, called Ered Luin, were the great range that in the Elder Days divided Beleriand from the lands eastward, and in later ages marked the western bound of Eriador. In their depths stood the ancient Dwarf-cities of Nogrod and Belegost, whose smiths were renowned through the world; and thither in after years the exiled folk of Durin came, Thrain and Thorin among them, to dwell and labour before the quest of Erebor. From the Havens of Lindon at the mountains' feet the Elves took ship into the West.
