The realm of the Elven-smiths west of Moria, called Hollin by Men for its holly trees, founded by Noldorin craftsmen in the Second Age. Here Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain achieved the greatest works of craft since Fëanor — the Rings of Power — under the instruction of Annatar, who was Sauron in disguise. When Sauron forged the One and his deceit was unmasked, he destroyed Eregion utterly; the Fellowship passed through its pleasant, empty ruins on the way to Moria.
