The great region of northwestern Middle-earth in the First Age, where the wars of the Elves and Edain against Morgoth were fought. Here stood the kingdoms of Doriath, Nargothrond, and Gondolin, and here Beren cut the Silmaril from Morgoth's crown. At the end of the age the War of Wrath broke the land itself, and almost all of Beleriand sank beneath the sea; only Lindon, east of the Blue Mountains, remained above the waves. The deeds done there survive in song — the Lay of Leithian, the Fall of Gondolin, the Children of Húrin.
