The nine mortal kings who received Rings of Power from Sauron and were enslaved by them, fading into invisible wraiths bound entirely to Sauron's will. They are among the most feared beings in Middle-earth. Three were great lords of Númenórean blood, and one was an Easterling king named Khamûl, the Shadow of the East, who was second only to the Witch-king. They rode black horses, then fell beasts, and their presence inspired the Black Breath, a supernatural dread and despair.
The winged creatures ridden by the Nazgûl: hideous flying beasts with wings like webs of hide, perhaps creatures of an older world that the Dark Lord took and nursed on fell meats. They obeyed the will of the Ringwraiths. Legolas shot one down over the Anduin, and Éowyn slew another at the Pelennor Fields.
