Fornost Erain, Norbury of the Kings, was a city upon the North Downs that became the chief seat of the Dunedain of Arthedain after Annuminas was forsaken, and the last stronghold of the North-kingdom in its long war against Angmar. In the year 1974 of the Third Age the Witch-king took and sacked it, ending the line of the kings of the North; a year later a host out of Gondor and Lindon broke the power of Angmar at the Battle of Fornost, and the Witch-king was put to flight. Thereafter the place stood empty and shunned, and later folk named it Deadmen's Dike.
