Hobbits

Meriadoc Brandybuck

Also known as: Merry, Holdwine Of The Mark, Master Of Buckland

Frodo's cousin and one of the four hobbits of the Fellowship. Merry was intelligent, well-read for a hobbit, and possessed practical good sense. He was captured by Uruk-hai at Amon Hen with Pippin and escaped into Fangorn Forest, where they roused the Ents to march against Isengard. Merry swore service to King Theoden of Rohan and, despite being told to remain behind, rode to the Pelennor Fields with Eowyn disguised as Dernhelm. In the battle, he stabbed the Witch-king with his Barrow-blade, breaking the spells that bound the wraith and enabling Eowyn to slay him. The stroke nearly cost Merry his life, as the Black Breath afflicted his arm. He was healed by Aragorn. He later became Master of Buckland and was known as a great scholar of hobbit lore.
