Also known as: Fangorn, Eldest Of Ents
Treebeard is the oldest living creature in Middle-earth (excepting possibly Tom Bombadil, whose nature is uncertain). He is an Ent, a shepherd of the trees, and he gives his name to the forest of Fangorn (or the forest is named for him). He is enormous, tree-like in appearance, with a tall body, great arms, a mossy beard, and deep, slow eyes. He speaks in Old Entish, a language so ponderous that a simple greeting can take hours.
Treebeard encountered Merry and Pippin after they escaped the Uruk-hai and carried them through Fangorn Forest. Their news of Saruman's destruction of the trees around Isengard stirred him to rage. He called an Entmoot, a meeting of the Ents, which after lengthy deliberation decided to march on Isengard. The Last March of the Ents destroyed Saruman's war-making capability, flooding Isengard and trapping Saruman in the tower of Orthanc. After the war, Treebeard kept watch over Saruman until Gandalf released him. Treebeard's parting with Galadriel was poignant, as she told him they would not meet again unless the land beneath their feet was wholly changed.
