The ancient Gondorian fortress at the southern end of the Misty Mountains: a great ring-wall of stone enclosing a green vale, with the tower of Orthanc at its center. Granted to Saruman as a dwelling, it became his private dominion; he filled its circle with pits, forges, and breeding-dens for his Uruk-hai, stripping the trees of Nan Curunír to feed his furnaces. That proved his undoing — the Ents broke its walls in a night, drowned its fires, and left Orthanc an island in a lake.
