Dunland was the hill-country south of Isengard and west of the Misty Mountains, home of the Dunlendings, a wild people of Men who were the remnant of folk driven from their ancient lands by the coming of the Rohirrim. Bearing an old grudge against the Horse-lords who had taken what they deemed their own, they were stirred up by Saruman and marched with his Orcs and Uruk-hai against Rohan, fighting at Helm's Deep before they were beaten and shown unlooked-for mercy.
