Also known as: King Of Rohan, Theoden Ednew
Seventeenth King of Rohan, son of Thengel, father of Theodred. Theoden was a good and noble king who fell under the insidious influence of Saruman, channeled through his counselor Grima Wormtongue. He aged prematurely and became passive and despairing until Gandalf arrived and broke Saruman's hold, restoring him to vigor. Theoden then led the Rohirrim to the defense of Helm's Deep and answered Gondor's call for aid by riding to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. In that great battle, he led the charge that broke the siege of Minas Tirith, a moment of supreme courage and glory. He was slain by the Witch-king of Angmar, who struck down his horse Snowmane, which crushed Theoden beneath it. His last words were of his satisfaction that he had not brought dishonor to his fathers' legacy. He was buried with great honor in Minas Tirith and later in the barrows at Edoras.
