The sixteenth King of Rohan and father of Theoden. At odds with his own father Fengel, a greedy and unloved king, Thengel left the Mark in his youth and took service in Gondor, where he wed Morwen of Lossarnach — called Steelsheen — and did not return until the kingship summoned him. He brought Gondorian speech and customs back to Meduseld, and in his days a rider calling himself Thorongil served Rohan before passing into Gondor's service: Aragorn, who thus knew the Mark and its kings a full generation before the War of the Ring. Thengel's name was among those Aragorn spoke with honor at Edoras, and his daughter Theodwyn was mother to Eomer and Eowyn.
