Snowmane was the great horse of Theoden, King of Rohan, of the line of the mearas. He bore the king in his renewal and to the war, and at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields carried him in the charge that broke the siege of Minas Tirith. When the Witch-king's winged beast struck the king down, a black dart maddened Snowmane, and the horse reared and fell and crushed his master beneath him -- in grief, it was said, not malice. He was buried where he lay, and green grass grew upon the mound men called Snowmane's Howe.
