Roac son of Carc was the ancient chief of the great ravens of the Lonely Mountain, a bird of more than a hundred and fifty years, wise and grave and able to speak the tongue of Men. When Smaug was slain he brought the tidings to Thorin and his company within the Mountain, and counselled the proud Dwarf-king with sober good sense as the armies of Men and Elves drew near; and through his ravens Thorin sent word summoning his kinsman Dain from the Iron Hills. The friendship of the ravens and Durin's folk was old, and renewed in those days.
