Frealaf Hildeson was the nephew of Helm Hammerhand and, after Helm and his sons perished in the Long Winter and the wars with the Dunlendings, the first king of the second line of the Kings of Rohan. He came down out of his refuge to retake Edoras and slew the usurper Wulf in the Golden Hall, and in his reign the weakened Mark slowly recovered its strength. It was in his day that Saruman first came to dwell in Isengard, seeming then a friend and ally to Rohan.
