Also known as: Arvedui Last-King
The last king of Arthedain, whose very name — given in foresight at his birth — means "last king." He claimed the crown of Gondor when its southern line failed, by right of descent from Isildur and his marriage to Firiel, daughter of King Ondoher; Gondor refused him, a decision with a thousand years of consequences. When the Witch-king overwhelmed Arthedain in 1974, Arvedui fled north to the ice-bay of Forochel, where the Snowmen of the Lossoth sheltered him against their own misgivings. He took ship despite their warning of the weather; the ship was crushed in the ice, and with him drowned the palantiri of Annuminas and Amon Sul. Yet his line endured through his son Aranarth, first Chieftain of the Dunedain, down to Aragorn — who made good both claims at last.
