Earnil II was a king of Gondor in the later Third Age, a great captain who came to the throne after King Ondoher and his sons fell in battle against the Wainriders. He won a crushing victory over those same Easterlings and their Haradrim allies, restoring the strength of the realm for a time. It was in his reign that the Witch-king at last forsook the ruined North and seized the city of Minas Ithil, which thereafter was called Minas Morgul; and his son Earnur was the last king of Gondor before the long rule of the Stewards.
