Also known as: Gilraen The Fair
Mother of Aragorn and wife of Arathorn II, Chieftain of the Dunedain. After Arathorn was slain by Orcs when Aragorn was only two years old, Gilraen brought her son to Rivendell and entrusted him to Elrond's care. She gave him the name Estel, meaning Hope, and kept his true lineage secret for his safety. Gilraen lived apart from her son for most of his life, returning to her own people while he wandered in disguise. She died in the year 3007, before the War of the Ring, having grown weary and without hope for herself, though she held onto hope for her son. Her last words to Aragorn were a kenning: 'I gave Hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself.'
