Cirdan the Shipwright is among the eldest of all the Elves of Middle-earth, a lord of the Teleri who came west in the Great Journey but turned aside to seek his lost friend Elwe, and so was sundered from those who sailed at last into the Blessed Realm. A master of ship-craft beyond any other, he raised the Havens of the Falas in the First Age, and after the drowning of Beleriand he kept the Grey Havens, Mithlond, upon the Gulf of Lune through the Second and Third Ages. He was gifted with the keenest foresight of any in Middle-earth, and is one of the very few Elves ever described as bearded, a token of his measureless age.
When the Istari came over Sea at the beginning of their mission, Cirdan welcomed them at the Havens; and perceiving at once the greatness of the spirit hidden within the grey pilgrim, he gave to Gandalf Narya, the Ring of Fire, that he might kindle hearts against the Shadow -- judging the gift better bestowed than hoarded. Through all the long defeats and watches of the ages he held the Havens and built the white ships that bore the Eldar out of the world. At the end of the Third Age it was Cirdan who saw the Ring-bearers and the keepers of the Three Rings aboard the last ship into the West, and the tradition holds that he himself will linger until the very last vessel sails from Middle-earth.
