Daughter of Thingol and Melian, Luthien was the fairest of all the Children of Iluvatar who ever lived. She fell in love with the mortal man Beren, and together they undertook the most famous quest in all of Tolkien's legendarium: the recovery of a Silmaril from Morgoth's iron crown. Luthien's power was immense. She defeated Sauron, toppling his tower of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, and she put Morgoth himself to sleep with her song, allowing Beren to pry a Silmaril from the Iron Crown. When Beren was killed by the great wolf Carcharoth, Luthien went before Mandos and sang a song of such surpassing beauty and grief that the Doomsman was moved to pity for the only time. She was given a unique choice: to live as an immortal Elf without Beren, or to become mortal and share in his fate. She chose mortality, and they lived together again in Tol Galen until they died. Through their son Dior, their lineage continued to Elwing, Earendil, Elrond, and Arwen.
