Arwen Undomiel, the Evenstar of her people, was the daughter of Elrond and Celebrian and, through her mother's mother Galadriel, of the line of the High Kings of the Noldor; on her father's side she came of Earendil and of Luthien Tinuviel herself, whom she was said to resemble so nearly that she was accounted the fairest of all the children of Iluvatar in the latter days of the world. Born early in the Third Age, she dwelt the long years in Rivendell and among her mother's kin in Lothlorien.
She first met Aragorn in the woods of Rivendell when he was a young man newly told of his lineage, and he took her at first for Luthien walking out of an elder song; but it was long afterward, in the golden land of Lothlorien, that they plighted their troth upon the hill of Cerin Amroth. Like Luthien before her, Arwen made the Choice of the Half-elven and accepted mortality for love, surrendering her deathless life and the road into the West, never to see her father again. After the War of the Ring she wedded Aragorn and became Queen of the Reunited Kingdom, and bore him a son, Eldarion, and daughters. When at the last Aragorn surrendered his life, Arwen, bereft, went alone to the faded and deserted woods of Lothlorien; and there upon Cerin Amroth she laid herself down and died, closing the long echo of Luthien's choice.
